Music (Not) For The Masses

Wow. Just realized it's been a month since I've last posted. I've been a little distracted with some all-consuming personal stuff going on at home these days so I'll use that as my excuse.

Anyway, I've decided I need to rant about a topic that I know bothers lots of music lovers out there: Outrageous fees from ticket selling sites such as the Evil Ticketmaster.

But first, I'll give a little "Kitty's Art" update. My art making, as you know from previous posts, had been going very slowly for me since the first of the year. But I am happy to report that things are moving along at a much preferred pace.

First, I finally finished the piece that I started in the beginning of February. In my opinion, it came out really well and I am very happy with it. I think it will be titled Inner Balance. I'll decide for sure when I post images to my website which should be in a couple of weeks. I am going to have an in-house photo session in about a week to catch up on my portfolio. Stay tuned for new images.

Anyway, I began a new sculpture last week and it is coming along quite well. I hope to have it completed next week. Lately, I have been feeling more motivated and more inspired to carve. It's been great. Spring weather is helping, I am sure. But also, I think, for now anyway, I have moved past some of the insecurities and doubts I was having about this latest body of work. Or it could be that my personal issues have been more intense and right now my art is a nice, pleasant distraction. Whatever. The point is, I am back on track art-wise.

Okay, on to the rant. So, last month the San Francisco Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park was announced. Oh my gosh, how exciting is this. Radiohead. Jack Johnson. Tom Petty. And tons of other great bands playing for three days in my own back yard, so to speak. I am so there. Or so I thought.

Presale ticket sales began yesterday and Eric and I immediately got on line. However, in the end we did not purchase tickets. Here's an email I sent to the KFOG Morning Show this morning. Unfortunately they did not read my letter on the air. But here's what it said which gives you the gist of my complaint.

Ever since hearing about the Outside Lands music festival my husband and I have been very excited about going. We went on-line yesterday to purchase tickets during the Visa presale. $225.50 per ticket would be a splurge but totally worth it given the line up. When we saw the $25.50 per ticket convenience charge (what exactly is the convenience?) we were disturbed but pressed on. When it came time to check out we saw that we would be charged $18.50 to have the tickets Fed-Ex'd to us and that was our only shipping choice. At this point we changed our minds. With the ticket face value and all of the fees (did I mention there was an additional $4.40 processing charge?), our grand total for two three-day passes would be $524.90. Outrageous! We cancelled the order and are now hoping that single day passes will go on sale later and maybe we can make it the day Radiohead plays. I have always seen music festivals as being affordable and for the masses. The best bang for the buck. What a shame that high ticket prices and fees make this festival elitist at best and a rip-off at worst.
So annoying. I love seeing live music and especially going to music festivals. Eric and I definitely spend a good portion of our income on music, it's a passion. But really. These fees are criminal. Not that anyone can do anything about it, however. Nice try Pearl Jam. The best I can do is not give in. But it sucks. I really wanted to go to all three days. But unless I win tickets or get them as a gift it's just not gonna happen. Rats.

Joke of the Day: Why do hipsters have such a hard time with karate? They can't get past the white belt.

Heh! I could use a good laugh.
